A consortium which includes engineering giant Wartsila has won an order from renewable energy company RWE Innogy to design two jack-up crane vessels for building offshore wind farms.
The IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft consortium will design the vessels, which will be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
The crane vessels will be used to handle the foundations of wind turbines with capacities up to 5MW and 6MW, as well as the turbine towers, nacelles, rotors and blades.
Wärtsilä said the vessels can carry the components for up to four complete wind turbine units.
