Dredging at the port of Baku in Azerbaijan will start later this year, it has been revealed.

The focus of the port will be the construction of a rail ferry terminal connecting the ports of Aktau, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, to Baku, according to engineering consultancy firm Royal Haskoning.

The port is also expected to provide a general cargo terminal, cargo handling facilities, ro-ro facilities and a passenger terminal, reports sandandgravel.com.

Baku is a main hub on the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia corridor that connects Europe via the Caucasus and Caspian Sea with Central Asia and China.

Royal Haskoning said the location of the port aims to improve the north-south corridor trade, allowing fast cargo services between Russia’s north-west and Persian Gulf states.
