Cross Channel ferry operators could see increased passenger numbers as volcanic ash continues to ground aircraft in Western Europe.

Passengers who managed to make it to Calais, France, reported having no problems getting a place on ferries.

Operators have been putting on extra services and have even drafted freight vessels into operation to help stranded travellers.

The ash cloud has started to dissipate allowing airports in Scotland to reopen this morning.

Heathrow is closed indefinitely while Gatwick and Manchester may resume operations this afternoon.
