Power and automation technology group ABB has secured a $5m contract from Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to supply propulsion systems for windmill installation vessels.

The company will supply the systems for two vessels with an option for one more to be owned and operated by German energy company RWE Innogy, ABB said.

ABB said the fuel-efficient electrical propulsion systems have been designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

ABB said the installation ship requires variable power and depends on exact positioning to maximise cargo capacity for loading of material and special equipment.

ABB said the vessels will be constructed in South Korea and delivered in 2011.
