Global shipping bodies have joined together in an e-petition campaign to push for stronger government action against Somali piracy.

The campaign calls for the allocation of government resources to curb piracy, the release of kidnapped seafarers and efforts to create a stable Somalia.

The signatures will be presented to world governments on 23 September, World Maritime Day, according to

International Ship Federation president Spyros M Polemis said 90% of world trade is carried by sea and governments have a duty to extend the naval protection being provided.

Nearly 1,800 seafarers have been kidnapped in the last two years, Polemis said.
