Yemen is building a coastguard base on Miyoun Island in the Bab al-Mandab strait to protect vessels operating in the Europe to Asia shipping lane against militant attacks, according to the Yemeni Coastguard.

The base is expected to reduce pirate attacks against commercial ships, including tankers and dry bulkers, in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

The coastguard station will be situated at the southern rim of the Arabian Peninsula, near one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors that leads to the Suez Canal.

Over three million barrels of oil pass through the Bab al-Mandab strait every day from the Gulf on its way to Europe and the US, according to Reuters.
