Riga City Council has announced a tender for a $224m contract to transfer the port of Riga from downtown to the Russian island Krievu sala.
The project will relocate the facilities of the ports Andrejsala and Export to the island, which is nearer to the mouth of the Daugava River.
The port project includes the construction of seven berths, rail yards and terminals and will have a capacity to handle 22 million tons of cargo.
The relocation is being done because inbound ships have to travel an extra 15-20km to reach the existing terminal, reducing the competitiveness of the port.
Bids will be submitted before 14 July and the port will commence operations in 2014, according to dredgingtoday.com.
