Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has unveiled what it calls a “unique” LNG cargo containment system.

The company said the aluminium cargo tank – independent type B (ACT-IB) – has the largest storage capacity of any other ship containment system.

The technology involved in the system will be applied to the company’s LNG-FPSOs and LNG carriers, it said.

DSME said the ACT-IB can contain a maximum of 210,00m3 of LNG, which is a threefold increase, with a conventional containment system of about 80,0003.

The containment system allows easy integration into LNG carriers or floating facilities and enables the company to save a significant amount of royalty fees currently paid to the French or Japanese LNG containment systems.

The tank has successfully completed a test programme, which includes thermal stress analysis, fatigue analysis and crack growth analysis, the company said.
