Somali pirates have hijacked a chemical products tanker in the Red Sea.

The 13,065dwt MV Motivator was attacked in the northern Bab Al Mandeb area between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, according to Eunavfor.

The Greek-owned vessel was carrying lubricating oil and 18 crew members from the Philippines, the agency said.

According to an estimate, in 2009 pirates made about 200 attacks, including 68 successful hijackings and $50m paid out in ransoms.
