Nine companies are competing to build a proposed INR36.8bn ($786.9m) container terminal for the Chennai Port Trust in India.

The trust said the contract will be awarded by August, according to Financial Express.

The terminal, with a capacity to handle five million teu, will be built north of the existing Bharathi Dock with a quay length of 2km and depth of 22m.

The project is expected to be commissioned by 2013 and fully operational by 2017.

The terminal is expected to increase the overall port capacity to eight million teu.

The companies bidding for the project include DP World, IL&FS Maritime Infrastructure Company, Lanco Infratech, L&T Transport Private Development Project; FGI International and a consortium led by GVK.
