DP World’s container volume in the first half of 2010 increased 16% compared with the same period in 2009.

The company said the jump represents a handling capacity of 23.7 million teu across its portfolio of 50 terminals.

It said the growth was boosted by terminals in Asia as well as the recovery of volumes at European ports.

A terminal opened at Callao in Peru at the end of Q2 2010 while new terminals at Vallarpadam, India, and Karachi, Pakistan, are scheduled to open in 2011, the company said.

DP World said the return of container volume growth was better than expected during the first half of 2010.
