The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has teamed up with Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute to study the energy efficiency of a device that could enhance the propulsion efficiency of bulk carriers.

The ATS said the device would help Capesize bulk carriers save between 450t and 760t of fuel a year.

The two-year study will use computational fluid dynamics technology to analyse the flow field.

The technology requires the device to be placed in front of the propeller.

The study will also use the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computation to study and assess the suitability of the device, according to motorship.com.
