Pipe laying vessel design VS 4146 PLV

ABB has secured an $18m order from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) to supply energy-efficient propulsion and electrical power systems for two new deep-sea pipeline installation vessels (PLVs) currently on order.

Under the deal, ABB will provide drives, motors and generators, medium voltage switchgear, transformers and softstarters that will help the vessels use less fuel, and also offer energy-efficient propulsion on board.

The company will be responsible for the full project and also complete engineering work for its own scope of supply.

According to the ABB, the new diesel electric propulsion system will help reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions compared to traditional diesel mechanical systems.

The vessels were ordered by a joint venture between French oil service company Technip and Brazil’s Odebrecht Oil & Gas (OOG) in November 2011.

After delivery, they will be used to install umbilical and flexible flow lines and risers that connect sub-sea wells to floating installations at a water depth of up to 2,500m along the coast of Brazil for Petrobras.

Scheduled to be delivered in August 2014, the vessels are 146m long, 30m wide, and are fitted with cranes, as well as a large pipe reel that weighs 17,300t.

Developed by Wärtsila Ship Design, the vessels will be built to the VS 4146 PLV design with a capacity of 550mt, and will be designed for flexible pipe laying operations and improved fuel consumption.
