International classification society ABS has classed the first Japanese-flagged 302,488dwt crude carrier, Yamatogawa, which is owned by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha.
ABS Pacific Division president and COO Derek Novak said: "We are honoured to become the first foreign class society to include a Japanese-flagged vessel in our fleet.

ABS, which opened its Japanese office in 1949, was awarded the status of a recognised organisation (RO) by the Japanese Government in December 2012.
This designation helps ABS to provide statutory certification services to Japanese-flagged vessels on behalf of the government and verify the compliance of those vessels with the international safety and environmental conventions.
ABS had also been selected to serve as the first foreign classification society for a newly constructed Japanese-flagged vessel of Offshore Japan Corporation, a collaboration of Kawasaki Kinkai Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line Kinkai) and Offshore Operation.
