Aker to construct two TEU containerships for Matson Navigation

Matson Navigation Company, a subsidiary of Matson, has selected Aker Philadelphia Shipyard for the construction of two new 3,600 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containerships for $418m.

The first of the two new vessels will be named after the late Senator Daniel K Inouye, who supported the US maritime industry and helped drive Hawaii’s economy, claims the company.

Matson CEO and president Matt Cox said they are pleased to introduce the Aloha Class containership, built specifically to meet Hawaii’s future freight demands with increased cargo capacity.

"The new ships are designed to accommodate the diversified mix of cargo needed to support the state’s economy and will boost our capacity for moving 45-foot containers and refrigerated cargo," Cox added.

Expected to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2018, the new vessels will be equipped with dual fuel engines that have liquefied natural gas (LNG) capability and can travel at speeds in excess of 23 knots.

The 850ft-long vessels will also feature fuel efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks and fresh water ballast systems.

Claimed by the company to be the largest that Jones Act containerships has ever constructed, the vessels will be able to navigate safely into Hawaii’s smaller ports, while ensuring timely delivery of goods.

"The ships will also carry construction materials more effectively. Most importantly, this considerable investment underscores Matson’s long-term commitment to providing Hawaii with a strong, reliable lifeline to and from the US mainland" Cox said.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard president and CEO Kristian Rokke said, "The winning of this order provides the shipyard significant backlog and valuable visibility out to 2018."
