APM terminals (APMT) has signed a contract with Shanghai-based ZPMC to modify ten ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, boosting the capacity of the APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles facility to accommodate ultra-large container ships (ULCS) of up to 20,000 twenty foot equivalent unit (teu) capacity.

Under the crane extension contract, ZPMC will upgrade APMT’s existing Terex-Noell STS cranes, making them the companys’tallest cranes, following a modification of the design by the original crane manufacturer.
The upgrade will also include installation of light emitting diode (LED) illumination lights to enhance visibility, and accuracy of the cranes’ associated optical character recognition (OCR) programmes as well as reduce energy use by 60%.
APM Terminals Los Angeles managing director Steve Trombley said: "Following the very successful handling of the 18,000 teu CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin at Pier 400 last December, the first call of a vessel of that size to any North American port, APM Terminals is continuing to lead the way with the infrastructure investment necessary to meet the needs of our customers, and the evolving requirements of American seaborne trade."
The handling of the 18,000 teu containership Benjamin Franklin at the APMT Pier 400 involved 1,500 longshoremen engaged for 56 hours to load and unload 11,229 containers using a record nine STS cranes on the vessel at the same time.
