The Bangladesh Government and International Maritime Organization (IMO) have teamed-up to improve safety and environmental standards in the country’s ship-recycling industry.

Bangladesh’s ship recycling industry has an annual gross tonnage capacity of more than 8.8 million.

Under the deal, IMO and Bangladesh will carry out a project titled ‘Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh – Phase I’, which is aimed at improving standards and sustainability within the industry.

The project will be carried out by the marine environment division of IMO in association with the Ministry of Industries of Bangladesh in the next 18 months, and will contain five work packages.

It will involve studies on economic and environmental impacts, management of hazardous materials and wastes, recommendations on strengthening the government’s one-stop service, a review and upgrade of training courses and the development of detailed project document to complete phase I.

The project will be mainly funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD), however a part of EU funding will come from the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS), which will partly manage work related to the management of hazardous materials.
