Boksa Marine Design and a Florida-based oceanography institute have signed a contract for the design and engineering of a new Coastal-class research vessel.
The new-build is expected to replace an existing vessel that will be used as a floating laboratory for scientists and students studying in the waterways of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Bahamas.

This design aims to address limitations of the current vessel, which was built in 1968.
Moreover, it will ensure that the vessel is capable of meeting both known and anticipated requirements of future research missions.
Boksa Marine Design president Nick Boksa said: "The vessel has a rich history of scientific education and discovery here in Florida and we hope the new boat will continue the institute’s ongoing mission."
The new research boat will be able to carry out a range operations such as water sampling, bioacoustics, sediment coring, and fisheries research.

By GlobalDataThe 78m-long and 26-wide vessel will provide more working space, including separated wet and dry labs, a larger work deck, separate galley and more comfortable arrangements for berthing.
The project covers the complete design and engineering of the new ship, as well as design of the shipyard bid package, development and evaluation of builder requests for proposals.
The Tampa-based company previously delivered systems and mechanical engineering services to the institute’s sister research vessel.
