Hamburg-based Bomin Linde LNG has signed an agreement with AG EMS Group’s Reederei Cassen Eils to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) for a new Helgoland ship being built for Reederei.

Reederei Cassen Eils will operate the ferry to transport people and cargo to the North Sea Island. The vessel is expected to be operational in May 2015.

As part of the agreement, the vessel will be refuelled in a bunkering process that is certified by both the classification society and the flag state, Bomin Linde said.

LNG will be provided by Bomin Linde and the operator will be able to replace more than 1.2 million litres of marine diesel every year.

"As the liquefied natural gas is cooled to around -163°C, security precautions and appropriate staff training are essential."

AG EMS technical inspector Claus Hirsch said: "The technical process is comparable to the process of bunkering traditional fuels.

"However, as the liquefied natural gas is cooled to around -163°C, security precautions and appropriate staff training are essential.

"We will carry out a study to record our experiences with this pilot project and use this to develop recommendations for good practice."

For this project, Bomin Linde LNG will develop a storage facility in Hamburg, which will also be a base for the delivery of LNG to neighbouring ports.

When delivered, the new 83m-long and 13m-wide ship will provide a daily, year-round service from Cuxhaven and an additional weekend service from Hamburg-Landungsbrücken, Cassen Eils managing director Peter Eesmann said.

The ferry will have a maximum speed of 20k and be capable of accommodating 1,180 passengers.
