Royal Boskalis Westminster (Boskalis) in cooperation with the Jan de Nul Group has won a €90m contract for capital and maintenance dredging in the port of Bahia Blanca, Argentina.

Boskalis has a share of €55m in the contract, which includes capital dredging and a five year maintenance contract to maintain the depth.

As much as 5.5 million m3 firm soil, which mainly consists of shale will be removed with a large seagoing cutter suction dredger starting in 2012.

Over a period of five years, the company will remove 3.8 million m3 of silt and will carry out the work with a trailing suction hopper dredger and a water injection dredger, as part of the maintenance contract.

The dredging work at the port of Bahia Blanca is being carried keeping in mind demand for global trade.

In August last year, the company had won a €200m contract to build a port terminal TX2 at the south-eastern Brazilian ‘superport’ of Acu, from LLX Açu Operações Portuárias and Construção Naval, controlled by LLX Logística and OSX Brasil.

Work included the dredging of an access and inner channel as well as land reclamation work for the construction of port facilities.

The total dredged volume will be more than 43 million m3, part of which will be used to reclaim land for the construction of the port facilities.

TX2 will be constructed by OSX Construção Naval and the work is expected to start shortly and last for two years.
