Testing, Inspection and Certification company Bureau Veritas has launched a voluntary notation to help shipbuilders and operators minimise underwater noise radiating from ships.
Grouped as NR614 Underwater Radiated Noise (URN), the notation is expected to control the environmental impact on marine fauna of all self-propelled ships.

In addition, the URN works as a standard system to evaluate compliance with specific vessel requirements for underwater radiated noise.
Bureau Veritas marine and offshore division technical director Jean-Francois Segretain said: "Underwater noise radiating from ships is acoustic pollution and there is no doubt that it will be the next big area to be tackled by regulators.
"Reducing underwater noise directly contributes to reduced noise and vibration levels onboard, which improves passenger and crew comfort."
The URN is able to cover both shallow and deep water conditions and deliver comprehensive measurement procedure along with explanations to manage measurement uncertainties and sets specific underwater noise level requirements, Bureau Veritas stated.

The notation’s one main drive aims to aid European stakeholders in meeting the Marine Strategy Framework Directive requirements.
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive intends to enhance the environmental state of European waters by proposing mitigation solutions to be put in place by 2016, with their efficiency proved by 2020.
This solution has been issued in parallel with the European research project AQUO, which is focused on underwater noise.
