Maritime equipment manufacturer Cathelco has received a contract to provide an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system for Eni Angola’s Armada Ali tanker.

Armada Ali is being converted into a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel from the VLCC Osprey, a 301,963dwt VLCC at the Keppel Yard in Singapore.

The ICCP system will offer protection from corrosion.

"FPSOs are on station for long periods of time without drydocking and there are clear advantages in having diver-changeable anodes."

The vessel has been contracted by Malaysian offshore oil service company Bumi Armada for the charter, operation and maintenance of the vessel by its owner.

Under the contract, the 335m-long vessel will be equipped with a fore and aft ICCP system, which will include a control panel wired to an arrangement of two Cathelco C-Max disc anodes and reference electrodes, which are mounted port and starboard.

The diver-changeable C-Max anodes can be replaced without the need for dry-docking and offer a high current output from a relatively small surface area.

Cathelco representative Andrew Gamble said: "FPSOs are on station for long periods of time without drydocking and there are clear advantages in having diver-changeable anodes, which can be changed at sea if necessary."

During operations, the anodes emit a current that flows over the hull’s surface to neutralise corrosive activity. As a result, the hull receives the optimum level of corrosion protection.

Cathelco has provided equipment for Bumi Armada FPSO conversions on five occasions, including the recent conversion of Armada Sterling and Armada Claire.
