CMA CGM Group has selected Marlink to upgrade most of its fleet with the company’s standardised Ku-band VSAT service, WaveCall.

Marlink has been contracted to install WaveCall on at least 35 CMA CGM vessels, in combination with the XChange platform from Astrium Services.

The vessels to be upgraded include CMA CGM Marco Polo, CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt and CMA CGM Jules Verne, one of the largest container vessels in the world.

Extensive coverage of the Ku-band was the key factor for choosing WaveCall for CMA CGM’s fleet as the vessels operate different trade routes globally, according to Marlink.

WaveCall will offer a 5GB/month data plan, which will allow the shipping company to increase its e-mail, web browsing and voice call offering to crew members when compared with the 200MB/month FleetBroadband packages currently being used in the vessels.

"The XChange platform offers enhanced control and management of connectivity."

The XChange platform offers enhanced control and management of connectivity, and a set of ‘internet café-like’ crew communications features.

CMA CGM will set up five WiFi access points per vessel with XChange, which will allow crews to connect to the internet by using mobile devices and laptops.

Marlink will provide services such as VPN connection for safe and reliable operational connectivity, and SeaWebControl, which blocks access to specific websites, and restricts access to bandwidth-consuming services.

CMA CGM Group CMA Ships executive vice-president Ludovic Gerard said CMA CGM is the third largest shipping company in the world, and is committed to the welfare of its 2500 seafarers permanently at sea.

"Our desire to meet increasing demand from our crew members for reliable, low-cost internet access on board was a primary driver for choosing VSAT from Marlink and combining it with XChange, which offers full control of the network," Gerard said.
