freezer trawler

Seattle-based ship owner Fishermen’s Finest has signed a contract with Dakota Creek Industries shipyard to build a new US-flagged environmentally friendly factory trawler.

The stern trawler will produce frozen white fish products at sea, including groundfish, yellow and rock sole species.

The new-build vessel will be powered by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s MAN 8L32/44CR engine using the latest common rail technology.

The 79.8m-long trawler will be capable of accommodating 49 persons and is to be operated in the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea inside the US EEZ. It is expected to be delivered in November 2017.

"Fishermen’s Finest aims to be a leader in the competitive US fishing industry and habitually employs the latest technology."

MAN Diesel & Turbo USA managing director Robert Burger said: "Fishermen’s Finest aims to be a leader in the competitive US fishing industry and habitually employs the latest technology to improve the productivity of its fleet.

"In ordering our four-stroke engine, it recognises the commercial advantage it can gain from our common rail technology that is fully integrated with the engine and has best-in-class fuel efficiency accompanied by low emissions."

Designed by Skipsteknisk, the vessel comes with an effective hull shape that minimises hull resistance while moving on ice or in open sea.

The trawler will be constructed in compliance with DNV GL rules for fishing vessels and will be fully rigged for pelagic and bottom trawling.
