Damen Shipyards Group has developed a new mobile ballast water discharge technology InvaSave to enable port-based ballast water management.

The traditional, fixed onboard ballast water treatment (BWT) installations process water at intake, whereas InvaSave treats ballast water at the point of discharge.

"We have been looking for…alternatives for those owners who may not want to retrofit a ballast water treatment system, perhaps because their ships operate on fixed routes or their ships are too old."

The InvaSave will be delivered as a self-sufficient mobile container that handles 300m³ph, and can be scaled-up with the help of multiple container units.

The system can be fixed on a Damen ballast water treatment vessel or can be operated by moving around the port on a trailer, a pontoon or other type of vessel.

Damen ballast water treatment manager Gert jan Oude Egberink said: ‘We have been looking for what we can do to help our customers regarding ballast water treatment and finding alternatives for those owners who may not want to retrofit a ballast water treatment system, perhaps because their ships operate on fixed routes or their ships are too old and make the investment in a system prohibitively expensive.

"Ports may also need to provide back-up, in case a ship’s onboard treatments systems fail."

The system will be displayed at the international maritime conference, SMM Hamburg 2014, which will be held in Hamburg, Germany, on 9 to 12 September.
