d’Amico Tankers, a subsidiary of d’Amico International Shipping (DIS), has exercised an option with South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for the construction of two additional 50,000dwt product/chemical tankers.

d’Amico Tankers will pay less than $30m for each of the ECO design product carriers.

The new vessels are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2015 and will be built to the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) II medium range design.

Compared to the average consumption of the current medium range fleet across the world, the HMD design’s hull shape and propulsion efficiency are expected to provide average fuel savings of six to seven tonnes a day.

According to HMD, the new ships will meet Energy Design Index (EEDI) under the IMO phase-in 3 requirements applicable for vessels scheduled to be built after 1 January 2025, as the vessels use 31.5% less energy than the existing IMO reference line.

DIS will manage the vessel and will be employed either via time-charter, voyage charter contracts or through a pool managed by DIS or one of its affiliates.

d’Amico Società di Navigazione will be responsible for construction supervision of the Hull S410.

Following delivery, the MR vessel pair will be the most advanced and efficient ships of their size in terms of speed, fuel consumption, and deadweight and draft ratios, according to the company.

d’Amico Tankers currently manages a fleet of 40.5 double-hull MR and Handysize product tankers, with an average age of 6.2 years.

As of now, d’Amico Tankers has a total of eight newbuilding product tanker agreements at HMD including six MR and two Handysize vessels.
