Dutch engineering and consultancy firm DHV has won a $200m contract from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to build 11 new fishing ports in the country.

Under the deal, DHV will reclaim land and also build quays and breakwaters in the new port areas.
All the 11 ports will be spread along the of 539km coast and they will be located in Axim, Dixcove, Winneba, Senya Beraku, Elmina, James Town, Gomoa Fetteh, Moree, Mumford, Teshie and Keta.
Construction of the fishing ports is expected to improve the living standard of Ghana’s fishermen and lead to a more sustainable way of fishing.
Funded by a Chinese loan, the construction on the ports is expected to start in summer this year and is scheduled to be completed in 2017.

By GlobalDataDHV will also assist the Ghanaian port authority in the selection of the contractors and the company will also be responsible for supervising the construction work.
Earlier, DHV secured a deal from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to devise plans and designs for the ports.
DHV director of ports and waterways Ben Reeskamp said that the company worked together with the local population to examine their needs and the places where the ports could best be built.
"This provided the basis for making the designs and preparing the contract documents," Reeskamp said.
"Building the ports will provide better protection for the boats and it will be possible to load and unload hygienically in the lee of a breakwater.
"The client wants to build small modern ports, including a fish market, port buildings, good infrastructure and crèches."
