Firefighters have successfully extinguished the fire on a cargo ship, Britannia Seaways, on 17 November, almost 13 hours after the ship caught fire during extreme weather conditions in the North Sea off Norway.

According to the reports, the cargo ship was filled with military jet fuel and was carrying armoured vehicles and other supplies to a military exercise in Norway. The ship was operated by Copenhagen-listed DFSD.

Around 32 people including 20 crew and 12 military personnel were trapped on the vessel when a container with 7,000l of military jet fuel caught fire on the night of 16 November.

Norwegian rescue services spokesman Ola Vaage said it was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

Due to strong winds and stormy weather, rescue operations to lift the crew and military personnel off the cargo ship using helicopters were not possible.

The ship, however, was able to sail ashore, about 50 miles north of its original destination, the Norwegian city of Bergen, where firefighters put out the fire.

Officials claimed that none of the crew members or military personnel on board were injured and the vessel was ready to continue its journey.

The company said the ship will set sail for Bergen, where authorities will examine it.
