Norwegian shipbuilder Fjellstrand has delivered two of the six new Windserver wind farm support vessels ordered by Denmark-based shipowner World Marine Offshore.
The company has developed the two vessels using technology from the Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) and trimaran concepts.
The aluminium Windserver vessels come in two sizes of 25m and 30m in length; the shorter version can carry 12 technicians and the longer 25.
The hull design of the Windserver vessel is a trimaran and the centre hull is designed to operate as a Small Waterline Area Single Hull (SWASH).
The lower part of the centre hull is supported by two slim vertical struts and narrow side hulls are provided for stability.
The bow of the centre hull incorporates two attached fins that act as motion dampers in waves to provide a smoother ride for passengers.
The hull is also fitted with a ballasting system that allows the vessel to operate at lower resistance and higher speed when de-ballasted.
The vessel can achieve transit speeds of 25 knots to and from wind farms.
Each vessel has four diesel engines coupled in pairs to provide twin screw propulsion through Servogear CP propellers.
The newly designed vessels by Fjellstrand can be used for other purposes such as surveying, search and rescue, operating UAVs and for diving support.
Fjellstrand managing director Nils Aadland was quoted by maritimejournal.com as saying the contract with World Marine Offshore represents a significant milestone for Fjellstrand in pursuing new markets with renewable energy.
"[The contract] incorporates over 30 years of experience with aluminium fast ferries, advanced motion damping systems and special offshore vessels," Aadland added.
World Marine Offshore will initially operate the vessels from Denmark in the Danish sector of the North Sea.
