General Dynamics (GD) Nassco has delivered the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled containership, Perla Del Caribe, to TOTE Maritime as a part of two-ship contract signed in December 2012.

The ship follows the delivery of the first LNG-powered containership, the Isla Bella.

Perla Del Caribe happens to be the second of the two Marlin-class containerships built at NASSCO for Jones Act shipping company Tote Maritime.

The 764ft ship is the longest dry cargo ship propelled by LNG. It surpasses Isla Bella in its capacity and is expected to reduce emissions and increase its fuel-efficiency.

Perla Del Caribe will follow Isla Bella for its trade route between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In December, GD NASSCO completed bunkering of LNG for Perla Del Caribe at its shipyard in San Diego.

Perla Del Caribe received 210,000 gallons of LNG from California-based Clean Energy and Baker Hughes and Envent.

Clean Marine Energy is building North America’s first LNG bunker barge to serve Perla Del Caribe and Isa Bella.

Construction began in September at Conrad Industries’ Orange Shipyard in Texas, and the barge is scheduled to be launched in February 2016.
