Harris CapRock Communications has completed the installation of advanced communications systems on a fleet of 33 Royal Caribbean cruise vessels.

The communications systems were provided to cruise ships operating under the Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises brands.

The project’s scope of work included de-installation and installation of over 120 very small aperture terminal (VSAT) and terrestrial communications systems that will allow access to the company’s corporate network and business applications, broadband Internet and telephony services.

The installation work was done at 16 ports in the US, Europe and Asia Pacific and included procurement of more than 59,000 individual components for the project.

Royal Caribbean Cruises vice president and chief information officer Bill Martin said: "The new high-performing communication service deployed across our fleet enables innovative information technology solutions that improve both the crew and the guest experience while also improving our operational efficiencies."

Each of the cruise ships has been equipped with two or three of Harris CapRock’s SpaceTrack stabilised antenna systems to ensure improved communications.

The hybrid system combines Ku-band, C-band and shore wireless connectivity, which will allow switching between these platforms, allowing maximum service availability and less downtime.

Under the deal, the company was also responsible for providing equipment, installation, maintenance, service, and monitoring and support.
