Hochtief has ordered a heavy-lift jack-up vessel at the Crist shipyard in Poland for the installation of offshore wind farms.

The vessel, named Vidar, will be the company’s fourth heavy-duty special-purpose vessel for installation of offshore wind farms and is scheduled to start operations in 2013.

Equipped with a 1,200 tonne crane, the vessel will be used for the company’s own offshore construction contracts and also be chartered out.

Hochtief member of executive board Rainer Eichholz said "We are banking on the move to alternative energy sources and accommodating market players’ huge demand with our special-purpose vessel."

According to the company, the new special-purpose jack-up vessel will speed up installation and servicing times for the new generation of offshore power plants.

The new vessel will feature a loading capacity of up to 6,500 tonnes, a powerful engine allowing speeds of up to 12 knots and the ability to work in water depths of up to 50 metres.

Vidar will be financed through an operate-lease structure with a subsidiary of Santander acting as the lessor, and with the involvement of KfW IPEX Bank, Norddeutsche Landesbank, CaixaBank and Bankhaus Lampe.

Vidar’s larger sister vessel, Innovation is currently under construction at the Polish shipyard and is planned to be operated and chartered out from mid-2012 by HGO InfraSea Solutions, a Hochtief joint venture with GeoSea, Belgium.
