Japan-based Imabari Shipbuilding has received an order for eleven units of 20,000TEU ultra-large container carriers.
Imabari has secured this order for the world’s largest type of container carriers with support from Tokyo-based general trading company, Marubeni Corporation.
The 400m-long and 59m-wide ultra-large container carriers have been developed for overseas ship-owners, with eco-friendly features and advanced energy efficiency technology, Imabari stated.
The first vessel in this series is expected to be completed in early 2018.
A statement from Imabari said: "We have been developing large size container carriers in order to respond to increasing ocean-going cargo movement in the world.
"Through developing higher quality and better design, Imabari will push forward to constructing new building vessels more attentively with great care, in order to contribute to safe voyage and world ocean transportation."

To date, more than 200 container carriers have been constructed by Imabari, including the 4,800TEU Over-Panamax-type in 1995 and 8,100TEU type in 2008.
In December 2014, Imabari delivered MV Nord Draco 84,000dwt-type Bulk Carrier to Messrs. EK Line.
Meanwhile, Imabari has decided to construct a large newbuilding dry dock to construction of ultra-large newbuilding vessels, including the recently secured 20,000TEU container ships.
This 600m-long and 80m-wide dry dock will be constructed in a 100,000m² area located next to its Marugame headquarters in Japan.
The new dry dock will be constructed by the consortium of Rinkai Construction, Obayashi Corporation and Toyo Construction.
Work on the facility will start from next month and expected to be completed in October 2016.
