Kongsberg-PGS titan-class vessels

Kongsberg Maritime has secured a $50m contract from Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to deliver technical systems for a pair of new-generation seismic vessels being built for Norway-based Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS).

The deal follows Norwegian marine seismic and reservoir data acquisition firm PGS’ decision to exercise its options for two additional Ramform Titan-class vessels from MHI.

Under the deal, Kongsberg will deliver systems for navigation, dynamic positioning and thrust, and back-deck equipment handling for PGS’ third and fourth vessels.

The new Kongsberg Maritime ‘Full Picture’ packages are based on the systems supplied for PGS’s first two vessels, which are expected to be delivered in 2013.

Ramform Titan class vessels feature an improved GeoStreamer-based seismic package, which is designed to maximise the benefits of the GeoStreamer’s towing efficiency.

As part of the deal, Kongsberg Maritime subsidiary Kongsberg Evotec will supply back-deck handling systems, hydraulic and winch systems, and an integrated control system, which will support the PGS-developed GeoStreamer seismic technology.

The company will also deliver a specialised redundant seismic track system as part of the Kongsberg Maritime K-Pos DP class 2 system and thruster control systems, while the advanced K-Bridge integrated bridge system will provide navigation for Ramform Titan class vessels.

Kongsberg Maritime president Geir Håøy said, "Our ‘Full Picture’ seismic offering includes advanced vessel navigation and manoeuvring systems for efficient and secure transit and operations, a wide range of integrated seismic back-deck handling systems for improving operational safety and efficiency, together with specific technical solutions to enhance seismic acquisition."

The two new vessels will be capable of gathering 3D seismic data for sea bottom resource exploration, and will support PGS in its deepwater natural prospecting services.

Each of the Ramform Titan-class vessels will have a length of 104m, width of 70m and will be equipped with advanced 3D seismic data acquisition/analysis capability.

Delivery of the new vessels is scheduled to take place in the first and second half of 2015.

MHI is currently building the two originally-ordered Ramform vessels at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works facility.
