The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) is building a new $269m ship equipment certification centre in Gunsan, South Korea.

Scheduled to open in February 2014, the new facility is said to be the first to provide green ship certification for essential components, including engines.

The construction of the new facility is being supported by the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the local government and several research institutes. The new centre is being built to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) greenhouse gas emissions reduction and maritime pollution regulations.

It will feature an 8MW-class engine test-bed, hybrid power systems, a fuel Q/P and emission bench, organic ranking cycle (ORC) systems and other facilities.

"The new facility is said to be the first to provide green ship certification for essential components."

According to KR, a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), the 8MW-class engine test bed is attracting significant interest from shipyards.

Following its completion, the new centre will carry out inspections, certification, research and development (R&D) as well as acting as a test hub for new technologies.

In addition, the centre will become a global focus for green-ship equipment and machinery.

The Korean Register of Shipping chairman and CEO, Chon Young-kee, said: "This dedicated new facility will allow us to take the leading role in green-ship technology and become the global benchmark for testing and certifying vessel machinery."
