Lomar has signed an order with the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in South China to build up to six new container ships.

Designed by SDARI (Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute ) the 2200 teu capacity vessels are scheduled to be delivered from early 2014.

The company said that the new vessels will provide improved performance compared with existing container vessels of similar size by offering savings on fuel consumption.

Lomar CEO Achim Boehme said that the company is re-investing in its fleet with these new vessels.

"We look forward to taking delivery of these newbuildings which will enhance our existing portfolio and allow us to stay competitive, continuing to offer a comprehensive service across the whole of Lomar with a modern, fuel-efficient fleet," Boehme said.

In February this year, the company had signed an order with COSCO Group in China for up to six ‘Ultramax’ bulk carriers.

Scheduled to be delivered in 2014, the ‘Dolphin’ 64,000dwt Ultramax bulk carriers were also designed by SDARI and meet the latest IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR).

The new vessels have been designed to carry up to 11% more cargo than conventional Supramaxes whilst consuming about 13% less fuel.

The company operates 13 feeder containerships, most of them built in the 1990s, as well as bulkers, reefers, tankers and offshore vessels.

In 2009, the company had re-invested in shipping at scale with the $325m acquisition of the Allocean fleet of 26 vessels.

With the present order the company currently has a fleet of about 50 vessels.
