MacGregor -CNO

Cargotec unit MacGregor has secured an order to deliver variable frequency drive (VFD) electric cranes and hydraulically-operated hatch covers for China Navigation’s (CNCo) four new ‘Chief Class’ 22,000dwt multi-purpose vessels (MPVs).

Under the deal, each vessel currently being built by China’s Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding will be equipped with three 60t VFD MacGregor cranes and hydraulically-operated MacGregor hatch covers.

Designed to provide efficient and flexible freight solutions, the vessels are expected to be delivered in late 2014 and the first quarter of 2015; the contract also includes options for another four vessels.

Following delivery, the new vessels will be operated for CNCo’s Swire Shipping liner division, trading between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The Chief Class vessels will have a length of 175m and will be able to carry cargo on a 9.5m draft at a design speed of 15.5 knots with a maximum speed of 17.5 knots when fully loaded.

Apart from meeting the route’s general cargo requirements, the new vessels will be capable of transporting a wide range of cargo including breakbulk, over-dimensional and heavy-lift project cargoes of about 120t.

MacGregor’s sales manager of cargo cranes Svante Lundberg said: "The cranes’ enhanced efficiency is mainly attributable to faster and more accurate load positioning which reduces the time spent in port, along with a 30%-35% reduction in power consumption compared to electro-hydraulic cranes."

According to MacGregor, its hatches, cellguides and fixed fittings solution integrates cargo areas with hydraulic folding hatch covers both on the weather deck and tween deck, with areas of lift-away hatch covers on the weather deck and cellguides in hold.

CNCo also has a series of 12 39,500dwt bulk carriers being built at China’s Chengxi shipyard, which will be equipped with 48 electrically-driven bulk versions of MacGregor VFD cranes.
