MAN Diesel & Turbo has received an order to deliver four 9L48/60CR engines for the diesel-mechanical propulsion of two Chinese passenger ferries.
The ferries are being built for China’s Huadong Ferry and Dadong Ferry at Huanghai Shipyard in Shangdong, China.

Under the contract, each vessel will receive two 9L48/60CR engines that offer a combined output of 21,600kW, two Renk gear systems and two five-bladed, 5m diameter MAN Alpha CP propellers.
MAN’s Alphatronic 3000 propulsion system improves the drive system’s efficiency and also reduces fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
In addition, the five-bladed propeller designs will offer low levels of pressure pulses and noise.
With a capacity to accommodate 1,500 passengers, the ferries will be used to connect South Korea with the Chinese mainland.

Since the China Shipowners’ Association has proposed to limit the maximum age of a vessel in service to 28 years, the new-build ferries will replace the old ones in the fleet. The two ferries will enter service in autumn 2016.
As a result, the company is seeing significant potential in the East Asian market with opportunities for the future, such new-buildings.
