Icelandic trawler operators HB Grandi, Vinnslustodin and Hradfrystihusid Gunnvör have selected Man Diesel and Turbo propulsion packages for installation on their newbuilds as part of a recently placed order.

The new vessels will be based on ship designs from fishing-vessel consultants and designers Nautic and Skipasýn.

Designed for better safety, operational economy and pulling power, the new vessels will feature changes in propeller, aft-ship and propeller-nozzle configurations.

HB Grandi’s vessels will feature four-bladed 3.8m MAN Alpha CP propellers, while Skipasýn-designed ships will be equipped with larger, slower-running 4.7m, three-bladed versions for an estimated bollard pull above 50t.

Man Diesel and Turbo Iceland representative Afltækni ehf source Styrmir Petersen said: "We have been representing MAN Diesel and Turbo for more than 20 years as sales and service agents in the Icelandic market, and now we are very pleased again to see increasing activities and investments after the financial crisis and following tough years for Iceland.

"The effective propulsion system of the vessels will operate in ‘shaft-alternator mode’ to minimise the engine and propeller speed."

"Additionally, it is of course both interesting and challenging for us that we will supply new MAN products and services to two state-of-the-art, Icelandic, fresh-fish trawler designs."

Both trawler designs will use MAN Diesel and Turbo’s Alphatronic 3000 general propulsion management and control system.

Vinnslustodin and Hradfrystihusid Gunnvör’s two vessels will be constructed by Huanghai Shipbuilding in China, while the three Nautic-designed vessels for HB Grandi will be built by Celiktrans Shipbuilding in Turkey.
