The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have agreed to jointly address the humanitarian crisis arising from unsafe mixed migration.
During a recent meeting, IMO secretary-general Koji Sekimizu and IOM director-general William L Swing expressed their concerns about the loss of life, injury, trauma and serious human rights’ violations affecting migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees travelling by sea.

A joint statement by the maritime and migration heads stressed the need for an enhanced cooperation and collaboration between their organisations.
Moreover, it also called for a concerted global effort to address the major challenge to the international community.
The statement said: "We noted the urgency with which the situation must be addressed of thousands of migrants who find themselves on perilous journeys.
"We held a silent minute in honour of the thousands of migrants who lost their lives on such journeys and we resolved to intensify our organisations’ cooperation to find international solutions to the issues at hand."

By GlobalDataAs part of this development, the companies will collaborate with other interested agencies to establish an inter-agency platform for information sharing on unsafe, mixed migration by sea, and the dissemination of information material on its dangers.
In addition, they will promote relevant provisions of the IMO treaties addressing the safety of life at sea, search and rescue, and facilitation of maritime traffic. The heads also agreed to support international migration law.
The new development will also utilise, among others, the relevant technical cooperation programmes of each organisation and set-up case-specific technical or advisory bodies as needed.
