Global weather intelligence company MetraWeather has been contracted by Sydney Ports to deliver real-time weather and marine forecasting technology for large boats entering Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay.

Weather Downscaled Super Ensembles (DSE) is a new forecasting technique that can provide accurate marine weather and marine forecasts for any location in the world.

The new technology provides information on wind speed, direction, gusts, wave height, the swell and tide, which can affect the operations at port.

Forecasts are gathered from different data sources and then complied to the exact location of interest, resulting in a cluster of 78 individual wave and wind forecasts for analysis.

"We can assist them to make informed decisions based on the likelihood that specific wave heights will, or will not be, exceeded."

MetraWeather business development manager Peter Fisher said that DSE allows engineers to assess the risk involved with their offshore operations.

"Five to seven days in advance, we can provide decision-makers with vital information about the potential severity of storms, which provides valuable insights for planning safe operations," Fisher said.

"Our forecasts quantify the probability of certain outcomes. We can assist them to make informed decisions based on the likelihood that specific wave heights will, or will not be, exceeded."

DSE is currently providing forecasts for four clients in Australia and New Zealand, where wave conditions play a crucial role in their operations.

With DSE, Sydney Ports will have access to both interactive under-keel clearance safety and berth safety forecasts, providing safety for ships inside the harbour and for those waiting outside the port.
