Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Hakata Shipbuilding have signed an agreement to jointly develop a 1,000teu energy-efficient container vessel concept.
As part of the deal, the companies intend to develop a new fuel-efficient, high-performance, low-cost vessel to expand their businesses in the international feeder container ship market.
The deal will see MHI provide hull form development and conceptual design of the container carrier while Hakata will be responsible for the basic and detailed design, as well as construction.
The two companies have received their first order for the construction of two container vessels to be used for time chartering by Korea Marine Transport Company (KMTC).
Mitsui provided support for the development of the vessel, which is claimed to have enhanced loading capacity and improved fuel efficiency compared to regular 1,000teu container ships.
The first two vessels are scheduled to enter into service sequentially from October 2014.
