Japanese shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha‘s (NYK) subsidiaries NYK LNG Shipmanagement and Nyk Shipmanagement have introduced new onboard training software for seafarers on LNG vessels called the LNG-Shipboard Training and Assessment Recording System, or LNG-STARS.
Designed for officers and engineers who will board LNG vessels, the new software will help users learn about cargo-handling operations carried out on LNG vessels.
The new software uses computer-generated images and animations to explain special cargo-handling operations, cargo management and the steam turbine.
The software also explains the operation of cargo handling equipment on LNG vessels, where cargo cannot be seen directly.
LNG-STARS carries out assessments of a trainee’s degree of understanding, enabling on-the-job training (OJT) that matches up with trainee understanding levels.
Crew members would be able to access the programme through PCs in several parts of the vessel through onboard LAN connection.
Users can also engage in training when they are not onboard with land access to the software, which is intended to ensure that trainees obtain the practical operation skills required to avoid potential accidents and problems.
