DEME

Dutch shipbuilder Royal IHC has won a contract from Belgium-based Dredging Environmental & Marine Engineering (DEME) group to design, construct and deliver a multifunctional trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD).

The contract is inclusive of the turnkey delivery of the entire vessel, including the dredging, electrical and hydraulic installations and the automation system.

Construction of the vessel will take place in Guangdong, China, and will be supervised by IHC.

Named as Bonny River, the TSHD will be DEME’s third of the series of order with Royal IHC, Minerva and Scheldt River being the other two TSHDs.

Royal IHC CEO Bram Roelse said: "We are very proud that DEME has ordered all their TSHDs since 1992 from IHC.

"This latest order proves that our turnkey deliveries are highly competitive in the international market."

The 15,000m³ vessel will be fitted with components to enable operation in a varied topography such as the provision of an extended suction pipe, and an additional suction pipe with heavy-duty rock draghead allowing the vessel to operate in hard soil areas.

"This latest order proves that our turnkey deliveries are highly competitive in the international market."

The Bonny River is claimed to be the first in DEME’s fleet that is supplied with a closed process water circuit which reduces turbidity resulting due to water overflow, subsequently allowing the vessel to dredge in environmentally volatile regions.

The dredger, by virtue of its limited depth when loaded, can also operate in shallow water.

It is incorporated with hydrodynamic hull and powered by diesel and LNG to facilitate fuel efficiency as well as curbing carbon dioxide emission.

The TSHD will be equipped with a green passport and a clean design classification to acknowledge the adherence of the builders and contractors to an environment-friendly design rendered to the dredger.

Last month, Royal IHC delivered two IHCBeagle 8 TSHDs to India-based Adani Group.
