Seattle-based maritime conglomerate Saltchuk is set to build a maritime complex on the Everett waterfront following the signing of a deal with Kimberly-Clark to purchase a 66-acre property on the site.
The property was previously used by Kimberly-Clark as a pulp mill and tissue plant.
The deal, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014, will bring as many as 250 jobs to the Everett waterfront, claims the company.
In the Pacific Northwest, Saltchuk has three subsidiaries – Foss Maritime Company, Totem Ocean Trailer Express and Interstate Distributor.
According to Saltchuk chairman Mark Tabbut, the existing Foss Maritime yard in Seattle is not accessible to larger ships and is too small for future expansion, making the larger, salt-water site in Everett a more attractive long-term option.
The shipping firm is currently developing a site plan for the Everett property and is working with local, state and federal officials to identify the permits to develop the site.
Meanwhile, Kimberly-Clark will continue to clean-up the site and accelerate its work with the Department of Ecology to develop the final remediation plan for the site.
Tabbut said the agreement with Kimberly-Clark will increase their presence in the North Sound and bring good jobs to Everett.
"We see tremendous opportunity and potential for further growth at the Everett site, a deep water port with unrestricted waterways. And we believe the redevelopment of this site as a shipyard and maritime complex will contribute a vital economic base to the Everett community," Tabbut added.
Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson said Foss Maritime will bring family-wage, highly skilled jobs back to the Kimberly Clark site.
Saltchuk will continue to use its site in Seattle for current ship-building projects over the next several years, with Saltchuk and Foss Marine headquarters also remaining in Seattle.
