Sembcorp Marine secures $4bn contract to build five drillships for Sete Brasil

Sembcorp Marine subsidiary Jurong Offshore has won a $4bn order from Sete Brasil to design and build five drillships.

It follows a $792.5m deal in February between Sete Brasil’s Dutch subsidiary Guarapari Drilling and Sembcorp’s Brazilian shipyard Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz to build an ultra-deepwater drillship.

All six drillships will be built in Brazil and based on the Jurong Espadon drillship design, with advanced capabilities and high specifications allow them to carry out deepwater operations around the world.

Each vessel will be fitted with modern drilling facilities, a larger deck area, efficient deck arrangement, dynamic positioning class 3 (DP-3) capabilities and superior motion, as well as a large moon pool for improved drilling operations.

With a capacity to carry 180 people each, the drillships will also be capable of operating in water depths of up to 10,000ft and drilling to depths of up to 40,000ft.

The drillships are scheduled to be delivered between the second quarter of 2015 and the second quarter of 2019.

Upon delivery, all six drillships will be chartered to Petrobras for 15 years, three of which will be operated by Odfjell, while the remaining three will be operated by Seadrill.

Sembcorp started construction on the Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz, the company’s first overseas integrated new yard facility, in December 2011 in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil.

The 82.5ha shipyard will be built in phases over a period of three years, with scheduled completion in 2014.

Sembcorp Marine has a network of five shipyards in Singapore, including Jurong Shipyard, Sembawang Shipyard, SMOE, PPL Shipyard and Jurong SML.

Currently, the group is building the 73.3ha Integrated Tuas New Yard phase I facility in Singapore; the project is expected to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2013.

Following the completion of the facility, the group’s ship repair, ship conversion and offshore capacity will nearly double from the current 1.9 million deadweight tonnage (dwt).
