UK-maritime-study

UK Transport Minister John Hayes has launched a growth study to analyse possible measures that could boost the country’s multi-billion pound maritime industry.

Chaired by Jeffrey Evans, a director at international shipbroker Clarksons and chairman of Maritime UK, the study will look at various aspects of the sector, with the aim of identifying the scope of improvements that could generate growth.

John Hayes said: "The UK maritime sector is a great success story, contributing billions each year to the economy and employing up to 260,000 people across the country, helping our island nation with daily life, from trainers to the food on our supermarket shelves.

"It is expected to be released in mid-2015 with recommendations for improvements in areas including ship financing, ownership and operation."

"The maritime growth study will look to maintain and enhance this achievement by ensuring the maritime sector can succeed in the future."

The study will analyse the present competitive positioning of individual subsectors in the global market and review the challenges and opportunities going forward, and where appropriate, identify drivers and barriers of further growth.

It is expected to be released in mid-2015 with recommendations for improvements in areas including ship financing, ownership and operation, and maritime education, skills, research and technology.

The report will also help the government in the administration of maritime activities, including ship registration and other policies.

The chair of this study will be supported by a Department for Transport (DfT) secretariat and a challenge function will be delivered through an industry advisory group led by Michael Parker, with members drawn from across the maritime sector.
