Salvage and Towage specialist Vitzer has awarded a contract to Damen Shipyards to deliver two additional ASD 3212 tugs with 80t bollard pull performance.

The vessels are currently being built at Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, and expected to be delivered to Svitzer UK in October.

The new tugs will be deployed for escort and towing operations on the Thames and Felixstowe.

Damen sales manager Martijn Smit said: "Damen is happy to be able to provide Svitzer with the standardised fit-for-purpose tugboats and fast turnaround they are looking for.

"Over the past couple of years, Svitzer UK has increased its Damen tugboat orders. We have a long history of fruitful collaboration."

"The new tugs will be deployed for escort and towing operations on the Thames and Felixstowe."

The new 32m-long and 12.2m-wide tugs are designed for push-pull, escorting, towing, and firefighting operations.

Powered by two Caterpillar 3516C HD TA/D engines with a total power of 5,050bkW at 1,800rpm, the vessels will be capable of cursing at a maximum speed of 14k.

In addition, the tugboats feature 2,800mm controllable pitch propellers along with special render recovery winches.

With this order, the tug fleet of Svitzer UK has increased to 21. The company ordered its first ASD 3212 tug in 2014.

In April, Svitzer received two new Damen ASD tugs, an ASD 2310 named Svitzer Yuma, and an ASD 2411 named Svitzer Freeport.

The company operates these tugs in and around the port area of Freeport on the Bahamian island of Grand Bahama.
