Wärtsilä has tested its first RT-flex50 version D low-speed marine engine with a turbocharger (TC) installed on the driving end side of a vessel.

With the completed test of the new engine, Wärtsilä has expanded its marine engine portfolio with an additional two-stroke engine with 50cm cylinder bore, which can be fitted to smaller vessels.
Wartsila president of Switzerland and vice president of product centre 2-stroke Martin Wernli said that with the new RT-flex50 version D the company completes its product range in this market segment.
"This engine opens new market potential for Wartsila two-stroke engines," Wernli said.
The company said that the TC is located directly above the fly wheel at the driving end of the engine to save space.

The narrow design of the engines will allow it to be accommodated in slim stern sections of a vessel where the current standard execution, with turbochargers mounted on the exhaust engine side, does not fit.
The company said that the RT-flex50 version D, which features a smaller cylinder bore and offers higher speed, can now be used in ships instead of other engine types.
Testing of the engine was completed in April this year at the company’s licensee Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
The RT-flex50 engine is equipped with fully electronic control of the exhaust valve activation and fuel injection and is designed to operate on a range of fuels, from marine diesel oil (MDO) to heavy fuel oil (HFO) of different qualities.
The Wärtsilä RT-flex50 low-speed engine is available in five-cylinder up to eight-cylinder configuration and covers a power range from 6100kW-13,960kW at 99rpm-124 rpm.
