Wärtsilä has secured an order from Estonia-based Tallink Grupp to deliver dual-fuel engines for a new fast Ropax ferry being built at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland.
Under this contract, Wärtsilä will deliver three 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF and two six-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF main engines, as well as two Wärtsilä fixed-pitch propellers and propeller shaft lines.
Delivery of the equipments is expected to take place in early 2016.
Wärtsilä Ship Power Sales general manager Mika Ojutkangas said: "The ferry will operate at fairly high speed and to very tight schedules.
"It is, therefore, important to the customer that the main engine propulsion is highly efficient and extremely reliable."
With Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines running primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG), the new vessel will be able to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) latest sulphur emissions legislation that came into force in January.
Wärtsilä said the sulphur oxide (SOx) and particle emissions from its DF engines are negligible at almost 0% when operating in gas mode.
In addition, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are at least 85% below the specified margin, and CO2 emissions are some 25% less than a conventional marine engine running on diesel fuel.
The new, 212m-long vessel will be used for Tallinn-Helsinki route shuttle operations, with a capacity to carry up to 2,800 passengers.
It will have a gross tonnage of 49,000t and be capable of cruising at 27k.
Recently, shipbuilder Meyer Turku contracted MacGregor to deliver RoRo cargo access and handling equipment for the new ferry.
